These are 60’ Greenville 7100 boxcars. These cars began their service in 1973. They were used for the transport of auto-parts and placed into pool service. These cars would travel the country to deliver components to the car factories. The ‘322’ on the cars designated that they were assigned to the Ford motor plant in Lima, Ohio.

In the early 1960s, the auto industry, looking for better and more efficient ways of shipping parts to assembly plants, worked with railroads and car builders to develop specialized freight cars. The primary requirement was the ability to handle a variety of different parts without the use of custom built interior fixtures and racks.

These 60' cars were for higher density items such as engines, transmissions and castings. Their big brothers, the 86' carts handled lower density automotive components such as stamped parts.

Greenville Steel Car Company (GSC) founded in 1916 in Greenville, PA. Acquired by Trinity Industries in 1986. Trinity eventually closed the Greenville plant in 2000.
